What Is SQL Used For?

Now that you know what SQL is, you may ask yourself, “What is SQL used for?” SQL is a coding language that is used to communicate with databases, specifically Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and Relational Data Stream Systems (RDSMS).

Computer developers and administrators are able to manipulate the data within the database with the use of SQL statements. These statements enable the programmer to perform certain tasks, such as updating data, retrieving data and filtering data.

Through the use of basic SQL commands, such as select, update, insert, delete, drop and create, the developer can program the system to filter the information stored within the database to create customised queries. This enables the user to store and modify vital pieces of information within one large database and retrieve specific types of information upon command. Common applications, such as Microsoft Access, Oracle and IBM DB2, are all developed using the SQL language.

The SQL language has given companies within all industries the power to store valuable data, including customer data, inventory and sales information, in a convenient and efficient manner. Due to its high demand in today’s marketplace, those with SQL coding and administrator skills are in high demand on the job market. In fact, it is considered one of the most in-demand skills in the IT industry today.
