Holsteins and British Friesians are two strains of the breed of cattle known today as the world’s highest-production dairy animals. Originating in Europe, Friesians were bred in what is now the Netherlands and more specifically in the two northern provinces of North Holland and Friesland, while Holsteins developed in northern Germany, more specifically what is now Schleswig-Holstein. The animals were the regional cattle of the Friesians and the Saxons.

The Dutch breeders bred and oversaw the development of the breed with the goal of obtaining animals that could best use grass, the area’s most abundant resource. Over the centuries, the result was a high-producing, dual-purpose black-and-white dairy cow with the ability to provide a good beef yield as well. It is black and white due to artificial selection by the breeders. The Holstein developed from Friesian cattle exported to North America, where the abundance of land allowed breeders to develop a milking cow with minimal regard to beef production.

At Holstein UK they create and design a Journal which is produced six times a year, reporting on current issues, news, events and updates on the dairy industry, the Holstein and British Friesian breeds and the Society.

The brief

 

In terms of training – Photoshop is the ideal software used by the Journal team for working with images for their publications, shows, exhibitions, events and advertising campaigns to enhance images and photographs and create high quality graphics to present and promote the Holstein and British Friesian breeds. InDesign software is used by the team to design their bi-monthly Journal and to create high resolution pdfs to send to the printers while Illustrator allows the team to design using vector graphics for logos and illustrations.

Delivery

 

Through a series of customised on site courses covering Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator for key members of the Journal team, we helped the team to create and enhance their designs, format text and produce montages of images which they could then apply to their relevant promotional material and publications.

Outcome

 

  • Following the training the team successfully created several montages using Photoshop which were subsequently used to produce creative designs for their Journal publication and promotional material.
  • Using InDesign the team were also successful in enhancing their creative design work for production of their bi-monthly Journal by importing images and montages previously prepared in Photoshop, which were then further edited and formatted with text.
  • The training on Illustrator has helped the team to prepare and design vector graphics, logos and illustrations to be used in corporate design work, advertising and promotional publications.
