Course Overview

This course introduces the Java Persistence API (JPA), and shows how it compares with existing Java database frameworks such as Hibernate and Toplink. Objectives

Objectives

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • Understand how JPA compares with Hibernate, and how you can move from Hibernate to JPA.
  • Reccognise the major JPA implementations - Hibernate, Toplink and OpenJPA.
  • Be able to use the Java Persistence API to persist plain Java domain models
  • Understand the JPQL for querying objects
  • Be familar with the lifecycle of objects in JPA.
  • Be able to use JPA either in standalone mode or on an application server as an EJB.

Prerequisites

A good understanding of fundamental Java. As a minimum you will need to be able to create objects, handle exceptions and use collections.
JPA requires Java 5, but all of the necessary concepts such as annotations will be covered if required.
